Fake KDF Recruitment Notices 2026/27: What KDF Actually Said

Fake "Kenya Gazette" notices claiming KDF is recruiting for 2026/27 are circulating online. KDF says no recruitment is ongoing. How to spot the fakes, where real KDF adverts appear, and how genuine recruitment works.

In October 2026, notices claiming that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) was recruiting for the 2026/2027 financial year spread quickly on Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok. Some looked like official Kenya Gazette pages. They were fake.

On 19 October 2026, KDF publicly warned against the adverts and stamped the circulating notice "FAKE". Here is what happened, how to recognise similar scams, and how real KDF recruitment works.

What KDF said

KDF's statement was clear: "No recruitment is ongoing." It warned the public about fake social media accounts offering opportunities in exchange for money or personal information, and said genuine vacancies are announced through mainstream media, the Ministry of Defence website and official KDF social media platforms.

The Ministry of Defence has also stated that any recruitment notice asking for payment is a fraud.

What the fake notices claimed

Versions of the fake notice differed slightly, but they had the same features:

  • A design copying the Kenya Gazette, with an invented gazette notice number and an October 2026 date.
  • Claims that applications were open from mid or late October to 27 November 2026, for officer cadets, general service recruits, tradesmen and ICT specialists.
  • Instructions to upload academic certificates and national ID cards through an unofficial website.
  • Fake "anti-corruption" hotline numbers, which in reality connect to the scammers.
  • In at least one version, signs of being made with AI: scrambled text and a fake circular stamp.

Fact-checkers found no such notice in the official Kenya Gazette records published on Kenya Law.

Why these scams are dangerous

Fake recruitment adverts usually aim for one or both of these:

  • Money: "registration", "processing", "medical" or "facilitation" fees, often requested by M-Pesa.
  • Your personal data: copies of your ID and certificates can be used for identity fraud, loans in your name or SIM card swaps.

Even if you never pay, uploading your ID and certificates to an unofficial site puts you at risk.

How genuine KDF recruitment works

  • No fixed annual date. The Ministry of Defence says army recruitment does not follow a fixed annual schedule; it depends on the forces' needs.
  • Announced publicly. Real recruitment is advertised in the national newspapers, on the Ministry of Defence website and on KDF's verified social media accounts, with dates and venues for every county.
  • In-person screening. The most recent mass recruitment ran from 13 to 25 October 2025, with physical screening in all 47 counties. Successful candidates reported to the Recruits Training School in Eldoret.
  • Free of charge. KDF does not charge any fee at any stage of recruitment.

How to check any recruitment notice

  1. Go to the official website yourself. Type the address of the Ministry of Defence, National Police Service, TSC or PSC directly into your browser. If the vacancy is not there, treat it as fake.
  2. Check the newspapers. National recruitment drives are advertised in the mainstream media.
  3. Look at the web address. Kenyan government websites end in .go.ke. Links to free website builders, shortened links or unusual domains are red flags.
  4. Never pay. Any request for money, however small, means it is a scam.
  5. Do not share your documents with unofficial websites, WhatsApp numbers or "agents".
  6. Check with our "Is this job real?" tool, or ask us.

The same trick is used for other employers

Fake adverts regularly copy other well-known public employers. In July 2026, for example, the Teachers Service Commission disowned a fake poster advertising 24,000 junior school intern teacher jobs. Police, prisons, KWS, NYS, county governments and big companies are also impersonated. The checks above work for all of them. Read our 12 signs of a fake job advert.

If you have already applied or paid

  • Stop all contact and do not send more money.
  • If you paid by M-Pesa, call Safaricom immediately to ask about a reversal.
  • If you uploaded your ID, watch for loans or SIM changes in your name and report misuse.
  • Report the scam to the police or the DCI, and tell us so we can warn others.

When genuine government recruitment is announced, we list it on JobsToGrab after checking it against the official source. Set up a job alert for government jobs so you hear about it safely.
