About the role
Stratostaff East Africa is recruiting an SME Relationship Manager in Nairobi for a client bank.
About the role
This is a hands-on, advisory role. You will win and manage relationships with small and medium-sized businesses, understand how their businesses make money, and put together the right lending and banking solutions for them, from first contact to ongoing portfolio care. The portfolio mainly covers businesses turning over roughly KSh 30 million to KSh 1 billion a month, with some smaller SMEs.
What you'll do
- Grow the portfolio: bring in new SME clients through networking, referrals and market knowledge, and grow lending, deposits, trade finance, cash management and digital banking with existing ones.
- Analyse and structure credit: review balance sheets, profit and loss statements and cash flows, judge whether a business is viable, and structure and package credit proposals with the Credit and Risk teams. Typical facilities include working capital, letters of credit and bank guarantees.
- Manage relationships: visit and review clients regularly and position the bank as their preferred partner.
- Protect portfolio quality: watch for early warning signs, keep arrears within agreed limits and follow KYC and anti-money-laundering rules.
- Support the team: guide Relationship Officers and work with Operations, Trade Finance, Treasury, Compliance and Credit.
What you'll need
- A bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, accounting or a related field. A CPA, an MBA or a credit analysis certification is an advantage.
- At least 5 years' banking experience, including at least 3 years in SME relationship management in Kenya.
- Strong, practical skill in reading and analysing SME financial statements and judging credit risk.
- Experience in credit analysis, business development and portfolio management. Trade finance exposure is an advantage.
- Commercial and financial sharpness, strong negotiation and communication skills, and resilience.
