How to get a HELB clearance or compliance certificate
Whether or not you took a HELB loan, you can get a certificate from the HELB portal or eCitizen. It is free.
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) certificate shows whether you are up to date with a student loan. Most public-sector jobs ask for it, even if you never borrowed.
Which certificate you need
- You took a HELB loan and are repaying: a Compliance Certificate, which shows your repayments are up to date.
- You have finished repaying: a Clearance Certificate.
- You never took a HELB loan: a Non-loanee Compliance Certificate.
Steps
- Log in to the HELB portal or eCitizen with your National ID details.
- Choose the certificate that matches your situation and submit the request.
- Download the certificate when it is issued.
Good to know
- HELB certificates are free.
- If you are behind on repayments, you won't get a compliance certificate until you clear the arrears or agree a repayment plan with HELB.
Processes and fees change from time to time. Always follow the instructions on the official website, and never pay anyone who offers to "speed up" a clearance for you.
